4 Benefits to Annual Youth Ministry Events

Kurt Johnston & Josh Griffin

Annual events in your youth ministry are certainly a double-edged sword. For many of the same reasons they are great … they are terrible. Today, we’re only going to give you a positive take on annual events, reasons we think a few annual traditions make good sense.

Annual = momentum
If an event is great – students will look forward to it every year. Every year in our junior high youth ministry we host The 3 – an incredible night of fun for $3 on the 3rd Friday of the month. It is awesome and the buzz around the middle schools is incredible. Legends have been passed down from generation to generation of 7th and 8th graders about how awesome this event it. OK, we’ve only done it for 3 years, but still.

Annual = safe
“We’ve done this before – you can trust us with your kid on this trip!” That’s what a long-running annual event says to a parent. “I don’t know about axe throwing, but shoot honey, they’ve done it for 6 years - I think we’ll let Kyle go.” After a few years of the same event, you get the benefit of perceived safety. Total aside: an Old Spice-themed youth group logging championship sounds interesting, right?

Annual = longevity
A youth worker who is hosting their 7th annual parents conference is doing something right. Granted, it is possible they inherited the program and just kept it going, but when we hear about a youth ministry doing something for years and years, we get excited because someone is investing in those students.

So should you turn an event into an annual occurrence? Maybe so! Annual events in youth ministry can be a powerful weapon in your arsenal. A few cautions:

  1. Not everything needs to happen every year. Mission trips to the same place at the same time every year seem ideal, however it might be good to keep the tradition of “summer retreat” but mix up the locale.
  2. Make it “The 1st Annual (whatever)” … and if it bombs, make it the last one, too! Don’t value “tradition” over “effectiveness” . If something is lame, don’t make it lamer by repeating it year after year!
  3. Just because something is an annual even doesn’t mean it is exactly the same every year. Pour your heart into the planning andpreparation even though this may be the 2nd or 3rd time.
  4. Don’t forget about the new people in your ministry! Never assume anyone knows about your event or the history of it.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15

14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Psalm 98

1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The LORD has made his salvation known  and revealed his righteousness to the nations. 3 He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 4 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; 5 make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, 6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn— shout for joy before the LORD, the King. 7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. 8 Let the rivers clap their hands, Let the mountains sing together for joy; 9 let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.

ALTitude

Good Morning everyone I pray that your day is well. I wanted to let you guys know that after much prayer and consideration I feel we will go in a new direction with the ALTitude team. The ALTittude team was in place before I came to Westmeade and it served as a great role to our student ministry. Over the past couple years we have seen a lot of younger adults stepping up. I am going to create a team called THE Refuge creation team.
This team will be consisted of a few students and some younger adults. This team will be 6 members. They will meet once a month and help plan the worship services and monthly programs that we do. I hope that this will create more ownership, give opportunities to use some of our younger adults, and make the events more planned to what students needs are.

We will have one final meeting in the refuge on March 6 at 12 pm Lunch will be provided. please RSVP.
